Triumph Bonneville Build-Off, Entries
Well, the Build-Off is back and once again dealers from across the UK were invited to participate. But this time attention has been focused on the Bonneville line.
Dealers were permitted to select any of the 1200cc and 900cc Bonneville models in Triumph’s Modern Classic range; and then reinterpret, much in the same way as the previous year.
Once again Triumph fans are being given the opportunity to pick the finalist of the competition by casting a vote for their favourite Bonneville custom.
Architect, presenter and importantly biker, George Clarke will on hand to present the Design Award – which will be live-streamed.
He’ll be joined by Olympian (and Scrambler rider) Victoria Pendleton presenting the Inspiration Award, alongside Jody Millhouse of Thorton Hundred Motorcycles who will present the Paint and Custom Award
And finally, Triumph’s UK General Manager, Devron Boulton will decide and present the Retail Choice Award.
Here are the nine entries from the dealers participating in the competition this year.
An ode to classic flat trackers.
Meticulous frame paintwork – eccentric pipes.
Seventies spirit, yet Daytona dreaming.
Girder forks – nostalgia abounds.
Subtle yet high and loud.
Exquiste tank – Miami beach machine.
Loud street scrambling menace.
Classic lines – a perfect tribute to a beloved father and colleague.
Triumph Bonneville T120
The T120 was the first official Bonnie, produced between 1959 – 1974, originally by Triumph Engineering, and in the latter part of its life, by NVT – Norton Villiers Triumph.
Although Triumph did make some minor alterations in the first few years, such as dropping the traditional headlamp nacelle*(believing that it didn’t look sporty enough) and changing the frame for a duplex construction (which itself needed updating shortly after), the T120 remained pretty much unchanged for the first four years of production, certainly in engineering terms, but for 1963, Triumph rolled out an updated & upgraded Bonnie.
The new Bonnie was of unit construction, meaning that the engine and gearbox were as one, which amongst other things, meant compactness, which in itself had the benefit of being stiffer. Triumph maximised this by adding additional bracing on the frame, mainly at the swingarm and headstock.
1964 Bonneville 120R
As the model rolled through the years, Triumph kept introducing minor changes such as improved front forks, combined with a slight change in the headstock angle, sharpening the steering and giving the bike a sportier feel.
The final upgrade for the T120 came about when Triumph started producing the oil-in-frame versions, rather than a separate tank.
Engine
3 out of 5 (3/5)
The Triumph America engine is lifted from the Bonneville but with a 270° crank rather than a 360° one. This means one of the pistons is a quarter of a cycle in front of the other giving a pleasing V-twin like feel and sound.
Somehow the spirited twin cylinder engine that was the hooligan motor of choice in the ‘60s has been sanitised and sedated to such an extent (not least of all by emission and noise regulations) that today it is a poor relation compared to the original.
The current air-cooled motor is now 790cc and despite the twin overhead cams and four valves per cylinder and a revised firing order from the standard 360 degrees to 270 it is a bit lame.
Triumph are proud of the noise it makes but with its oh-so-PC pipes the truth is it actually phut-phuts like a ditch pump. The first thing most owners will do is ditch the OE pipes for after-market versions (which, coincidentally, Triumph offers along with a wide range of other accessories).
To try and give the motor that suitably long-legged cruiser feel Triumph have also modified the cams, added twin balancer shafts to complement the revised firing order and made the fifth and final gear taller. All that leaves you with a maximum power output of 61bhp at 7400rpm and a peak torque figure of 44ftlb at 3500rpm.
It also leaves you with a somewhat breathless and vibey motor that doesn’t go far enough to match the spirit of the bike’s stylish and purposeful looks. It’s an engine that lacks soul, has no real grunt and crucially for a cruiser never really feels like it is chugging you forward with big fat lumps torquey power.
It will sit comfortably at 60mph (that’s fast in America!) and is good for 100mph if you have a rush of blood to the head and actually want to go that fast in that riding position. But if you want to be inspired by the engine…

Is it Reliable?
via Triumph Motorcycles
As mentioned before, the frame of this bike is a plus point that makes it much more reliable compared to the other bikes in this segment. The tubular steel cradle increases the strength and the rigidity of the bike, making it more reliable. The Bobber comes with traction control that makes acceleration and deceleration smoother along with the alternative to choose your riding mode. The parallel-twin cylinder engine comes with almost no reliability issues, making it the best choice to buy. The maintenance of this motorbike is just like any other in the segment, but what makes it beneficial for the riders is that the significant servicing of this bike is scheduled at the first 10,000 miles which is an outstanding achievement. Irrespective of the miles and wear and tear on the bike, it requires replacing the fret fluids and fuel hoses and evaporative tubes every two years, and it requires the coolant change every three years.

Bonneville T100
The Bonneville T100 is a modern take on the iconic 1959 Triumph T100. It beautifully incorporates a sculpted Bonneville signature fuel tank, wire-spoked wheels, authentic peashooter silencer exhaust pipes, and two-tone paint scheme with hand-painted gold coach lines. At its heart is Triumph’s 900-cc engine that puts out 64 horsepower and 59 pound-feet of torque — making it perfect for commuting or weekend rides.

Gauge Cluster Wizardry
I was very impressed with the amount of information available in the display windows found under the speedometer and tachometer, although I found the numbers too small to read at a glance despite the clean and organized layout.
Nonetheless, having a gear position indicator, fuel level, instant and average fuel efficiency, distance to empty, dual tripmeters, odometer and clock all available blew my mind when I considered the appearance of this Bonneville isn’t all that different than one from the 1960s.
Everything not matching the old style Bonneville is hidden so well that when I first glanced at it I didn’t even notice the radiator tucked discreetly in front of the engine.
What’s Old is New Again
In 1959 the Bonneville T120 was brand new on the motorcycle scene. The 650cc engine producing 46 hp was considered a monster at the time and the bike was one of the fastest in production. The T120 monicker implied a top speed of 120 mph, but when actually tested by several magazines it was reported only to have hit 108 mph. Still, it was an impressive machine all the same.
Although not a T100 per se, it’s this design that was emulated in the T100 and other Bonneville bikes going forward as you’ll see.
The “bodywork” or specifically the full fenders on the original bike were suited well to riding in rainy England, but weren’t popular with Americans and their overall much drier climate. This resulted in many modifications to the bike’s fenders and headlight nacelle by owners on this side of the pond to make it more palatable.
That wasn’t the end of the list of gripes against the original bike through subsequent years. At higher rpms the air cooled, parallel twin engine vibrated quite badly and even after several years of Triumph working on all kinds of different fixes, the problem got worse in many cases instead of better. They just never had the answers back then and this generation of the bike ended in 1983.

Retro tech
The retro-modern clocks are easy to read, while the digital dials deal with everything from an odometer to the time of day.
One read-out that caught my eye was the fuel efficiency figure, which rarely budged from the 60mpg mark, no matter how aggressive I was with the throttle.
Triumph claims this is down to the liquid cooling system, which is said to improve fuel economy by 29 per cent compared to older air-cooled models.

Yes, it is expensive but it’s also an extremely handsome and ludicrously slick machine, and one that we expect to prove popular on these shores.
Particularly because the T100 models can be specified with an A2 licence kit, allowing those who don’t yet own a full motorcycle licence to live out their golden-era Hollywood fantasies.

New Bonneville (800, 900 и 1200)
