2022 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401: Rugged and Timeless for Urban Adventure

Contents

The Svartpilen 401 from Husqvarna’s 2022 lineup unashamedly sports a brutal style. But, by definition, this bike feels at home on the metropolitan fringe, where the asphalt has more imperfections.

Harnessing its light and hard-hitting engine to navigate suburban streets, it is a master of its domain. The 2022 colors and graphics enhance the stunning appearance and reflect the progressive blend of modern thinking and classic design in keeping with the brand’s Swedish heritage.

The Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 is one of the market’s most outstanding and ‘pure’ European A2 bikes. Its progressive and robust style, developed by KISKA, is one of its hallmarks and a benchmark for its segment. Moreover, this bike knows how to mix inspiration from the scrambler world with more avant-garde lines, resulting in a spectacular neo-retro look.

The upright and dominant position, mixed wheels, and spoked rims are reminiscent of the off-road world. Its versatility allows it to go out on different surfaces but truly shines in the city. Its 373 cc single-cylinder engine and 44 hp give it great dynamism and capabilities, making it compatible with the A2 license.

This bike has WP APEX suspensions, Pirelli tires, ByBre brakes, and Bosch ABS. It also features Easy Shift, allowing clutchless changes up and down the six-speed gearbox.

The 2022 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401starts at $5,799 USD / $6,899 CAD.

On this page: we’ve curated specs, features, news, photos/videos, etc. so you can read up on the new 2022 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 in one place.

2022 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 Features

Engine

The Svartpilen 401 is powered by a modern 373cc single-cylinder engine that is remarkably compact. With 37Nm of torque from low down in the RPM range and a 6-speed gearbox, it is perfect for urban riding. The electronic fuel injection is operated by a ride-by-wire system and delivers a controlled and refined power. With a peak horsepower of 32 kW (44 hp), the SVARTPILEN is accessible to a wide variety of riders, while its lightweight construction means the power-to-weight ratio will also excite more experienced riders. For added convenience, the gearbox is linked to an easy shift sensor which allows the rider to make seamless up and down shifts without the use of the clutch. The sensor works by relaying the moment the rider actuates the gear lever to the ECU which in turn matches engine parameters to allow a simple gear change at any RPM or engine load.

Frame

The trellis frame is central to the Svartpilen 401 character and agility. Made from high strength chromium molybdenum steel using hydro formed tubes and robot welding, the frame is not only strong but also lightweight ensuring nimble handling and detailed feedback to the rider. Designed with specific flex characteristics, the frame works in harmony with the WP suspension to offer a comfortable and confident feel combined with a tight turning circle for ease of use in urban environments. The optimized subframe is extended by 40 mm for improved comfort when accompanied by a pillion rider.

Brakes

The Svartpilen 401 is fitted with hydraulic ByBre brake callipers, which are manufactured to the highest standards, and in combination with 320mm front and 230mm rear perforated steel discs, deliver controllable and confident braking performance. Additionally, the Svartpilen 401 uses a state-of-the-art Bosch ABS system, ensuring the highest level of safety in varying braking conditions.

Suspension

The WP suspension on the Svartpilen 401 is made to exacting standards, ensuring the highest level of quality and craftsmanship. The front suspension features 43 mm open cartridge forks, while the rear features a progressive damping system connected directly to the swingarm. The high-quality components offer dynamic handling ideal for busy urban environments.

Exterior

Reduced to an authentic mix of classic thinking and modern design. This Svartpilen 401 is synonymous with the Swedish heritage of Husqvarna Motorcycles. The lightweight and narrow bodywork is shaped into the Svartpilen 401’s design and intelligently allows for seamless movement while riding. Its dark colour, rugged tyres and protective parts give the motorcycle a rigorous look to match its urban exploration intentions.

Wheels

The 17″ wheels are a design highlight of the Svartpilen 401. The wheels offer a unique sense of style and are also very robust, offering premium reliability on unpredictable and challenging urban terrain.

Controlzone and triple clamp

Offroad style handlebars and risers attach to stylishly forged aluminium triple clamps, central to the control zone of the Svartpilen 401. In keeping with the minimalistic look of the authentic design, the control zone is not obstructed by any fairings and simply features a digital display unit with the necessary information.

Lights

The front and rear lights are distinct elements on the Svartpilen 401 and use the latest LED technology, the lights are more than just designer pieces and offer advanced lighting performance and visibility in urban environments.

Seat

The seat of the Svartpilen 401 uses high-quality foam and leather fabric, which, despite its reduced appearance, remains comfortable for the rider. Extending from the main bodywork and seamlessly floating above the rear wheel, the seat adds to the timeless design and unique riding experience the Svartpilen 401 provides.

Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 Summary

Engine Capacity 373 cc
Transmission 6 Speed Manual
Max Power 43 bhp

Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 is expected to launch in India in October 2022 in the expected price range of ₹ 2,70,000 to ₹ 2,80,000. Currently available bikes which are similar to Svartpilen 401 are KTM 390 Duke, Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 & Honda CB300R. Another bike similar to Svartpilen 401 is Yamaha MT 03 which is launching in October 2022 in India. Husqvarna is originally a Swedish brand that is now owned by KTM. Its products will sit above the Austrian manufacturer’s, and the styling, feature sets and pricing will reflect that. One of the first roadgoing products of the new generation of Huskies will be the Svartpilen 401. The name means ‘Black Arrow’ and it styled as a scrambler. Hence the spoke rims, dual-purpose tyres and upright seating position. It will be a 390 Duke under the skin, so expect the same razor-sharp handling, and the 43bhp/37Nm 373cc single-cylinder motor. Suspension will be provided by WP and brakes by ByBre. The Svartpilen 401 is scheduled to launch in the Indian market by 2020. This will be a good time for the brand to launch, because the new emission norms will force new products to offer a slew of features and up their desirability quotient – things that the Svartpilen was made to offer from Day 1.

Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 Drivetrain

Husky powers the Svartpilen 401 with a liquid-cooled, 375 cc four-cycle one-lunger that uses a counter-balance shaft to combat the often vicious vibrations normally associated with thumpers. Good thing, cause the tingly hands and butt set in pretty quickly on the older, less compassionately designed one-cylinder mills.

A DOHC times the four-valve head with a 46 mm throttle body and Bosch EFI to manage the mixture with a ride-by-wire throttle control and Bosch engine management unit. If you think the fancy throttle is a prelude to some electronic engine wizardy such as TC or rider modes, I got some bad news for ya; there are no such systems on the table at this time, but that’s not exactly surprising considering the pressure to keep prices low for the younger buyers this ride is mainly aimed at grabbing.

An 89 mm bore and 60 mm stroke give us the 375 cc displacement with a smokin’ hot 12.6-to-1 compression ratio, and that’s largely from whence the power springs. At 9,000 rpm, the mill cranks out 44 horsepower with 27 pound-feet of torque that develops by 7 grand; not exactly Earth-shattering numbers, but bear in mind the thing only weighs 330 pounds before you but the fuel in it, so that’s enough power to have some fun with. Not sure I’d brave the interstate on it, though.

A slipper clutch provides the anti-hop protection and lightens the clutch-lever pull while the six-speed transmixxer crunches the gear ratios and a chain-type final drive carries the final product to the pavement.

Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 Competitor

Though the looks of the Svartpilen 401 are rather unusual, if not unique, I think it still fits with the same kind of buyer that may be interested in something more conventional, like a Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, for instance. Like the 401, the Sixty2 comes cut down to the essentials so as to not waste any power hauling around unnecessary weight, and it starts out with the stylish bobbed front fender and minimal cyclops headlight can that also comes with a DRL ring for safety.

Blackout touches at the fork sliders, headlight, muffler and more give the Duc a custom-heritage tribute feel similar to that of the Husky, just in a more traditional setting. The slightly kicked-up subframes look cool on both, but the Scrambler’s mudguard is conspicuous against the tidy rear end on the 401.

Like the 401, the Sixty2 runs with a vanilla suspension setup and gives up plenty of travel with 5.9 inches front and back. Duc leads with a 320 mm disc and two-pot anchor and relies on a 245 mm disc and single-piston caliper to slow the rear with ABS protection, so we’re looking at similar brakes as well.

Ducati powers its ride with an air-cooled, 399 cc L-twin engine that, as you might expect, leaves off the fancy traction control and such like just like Husky did, but even though it enjoys a bit of a displacement advantage, it can’t quite manage to beat the 401’s numbers. The Sixty2’s mill cranks out 40 horsepower and 25 pound-feet of torque versus 44/27 from Husky’s engine. On the plus side, the lope of an L-twin is so much more pleasing than the lawnmower yammer of a thumper, says I.

The Sixty2 takes another hit at the checkout counter with its $7,995 sticker. If the entry-level is the target, it helps to keep that sticker-shock on the low side, and so the Svartpilen 401’s $6,299 tag should make it even more attractive in a contest between the two.

Husqvarna’s Rugged and Compact Road Machine: The Svartpilen 401

Contents

The Svartpilen 401 is a compact street scrambler from Swedish brand Husqvarna. Despite its rugged appearance, it’s one of the more road-focused models in the 2021 Husqvarna line-up. While it looks like it’s able to tackle tough trails, it’s actually designed for street riding. This European-made street scrambler is the ideal motorcycle for riders looking for a reliable commuter with an adventurous side.

It may sport an iconic silhouette, but it boasts modern technology. The heart of the Svartpilen 401 is a contemporary 373 cc single-cylinder engine—the same unit found in the KTM 390 Duke. The maximum output is rated at 44 horsepower, complemented with 27.3 lb-ft of peak torque.

The engine is held in place with a sophisticated trellis frame made from hydroformed chromium-molybdenum. Other highlights of the rolling chassis include WP Apex suspension, ByBre brakes, a set of 17” spoked rims, and distinctive LED lighting. Aluminum components, ABS, and an unforgettable aesthetic, all feature as standard.

For 2021, the Svartpilen 401 is available in a silver color scheme.

The 2021 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 is expected to start at $4,999 USD / $6,999 CAD.

SVARTPILEN 401 — Simple. Progressive. | Husqvarna Motorcycles
by Husqvarna Motorcycles

When I look at the Svartpilen 401, I see the classic standard shape with a scrambler bent and just a touch of cafè, all with a modern, progressive vibe that is meant to appeal to the newest generation of riders, and it probably will. Heck, even I like it, and I’m old enough to be their father. The design takes a turn toward the old homegrown custom-performance practices with a drastically whacked front fender that is right at the minimum of functionality.

Beefy 43 mm usd WP forks support the front end with beefy blackout stanchions that tie in visually with the blackout frame, swingarm, muffler and more, to include the cyclops headlight can that houses a bright LED projector. In fact, LEDs handle all the lighting needs including the taillight and turn signals. I always find that to be a comfort because it’s harder for cage drivers to miss/ignore a laser-like LED stabbing them in their eyes, which of course, translates into greater safety. Additionally, a ring-type DRL gives you a defensive-visibility boost during the day without having to run the headlight all the time.

Short-rise bars put the hands right in line with the steering stem for direct and accurate inputs and feedback with a single gauge that bundles all the important metrics into one round LCD display; all very neat, clean and classy. Rather than trying to keep the tank just as clean looking, and possibly to offset the meager storage opportunities afforded by the minimal pillion area, the factory mounted a cargo rack on the tank that comes complete with handy places to hang your bungees or a net so you can stash some stuff.

Hanging off each side of the tank is an almost fin-like protrusion that serves the same purpose as the flange atop a sportbike’s tank. The flyline dips down to a rather squarish bench seat that has just about an inch of rise at the break of the pillion pad. This results in a gentle segregation between pilot and pillion and will likely offer only minimal containment for your butt under hard acceleration.

The subframe, much like the front fender, is just large enough to get the job done and that’s it, and I gotta’ say I like the effect it has on the overall look especially with the hugger that eliminates the subframe-mount mudguard. An upswept exhaust keeps the muffler out of harm’s way well clear of the ground, scrambler style, for a nice finish to the look.
