ATTENTION!
When changing vehicle tires, some parameters of the original tires must be respected. Although, on many occasions the vehicle manufacturer leaves a margin of variation.
You can mount tires that are not exactly the same, they are equivalent. A standard size such as 225 / 40R18 cannot be replaced by a 185 / 80R13 because the 18 ”tires are fitted with brake discs that are too large for these measurements. But we can look for an alternative measure that guarantees security.
In order for tires to be equivalent, they must meet a series of requirements that we explain below. We also offer a tool to help the driver find alternative tires in relation to the original homologated tires. You can find it at this link.
ATTENTION TO THE SPEEDOMETER
In addition to differences in handling, changing the wheel size can alter the speedometer gauge. Fitting an equivalent tire with a larger diameter will cause the speedometer to show lower than actual speed. When mounting a wheel smaller than the original, the speedometer will show a higher speed than the real one.
IMPORTANCE OF RESPECTING THE APPROVED SIZES
All these parameters must be respected when modifying tires. Otherwise, it may impair your driving safety and you will not pass the technical inspection of the ITV.
ALTERNATIVE TIRES – GLOSSARY
Tire size: is a series of symbols and signs found on the side of the tire, eg 205/55 R16. The first number (205) indicates the width of the tire in millimeters. The second (55) is the height of the profile which is a percentage in relation to the width of the tire, eg 55 is 55% of 205, which is 112.75 mm. The third number is the diameter of the rim on which a tire is mounted (here 16 inches) and the type of tire construction (R – radial).
Speed index: determines the maximum speed with which a vehicle can travel with a certain type of tires. The equivalent tire must have a speed rating equal to the original. Using a tire with speed codes other than the one suggested by the manufacturer is dangerous.
Load index: determines the maximum load with which a tire can circulate at the maximum speed stipulated by the manufacturer. The equivalent tire must have a load index equal to or greater than the original.
Tire Outside Diameter: Overall height of the tire, measured from the ground to the top of the tread.
EXTERNAL DIAMETER
The difference in the measurement of the external diameter of an equivalent tire must not be greater than 1.5% of the original, nor less than 2%.
WIDTH AND PROFILE
The width of the equivalent tire cannot be more than 30mm compared to the original tire. Profile is the distance a tire has from the tread to the rim. In this case, the size of the profile cannot be changed and must be identical to the original. These are the first two parameters that you must indicate in our tire equivalency configurator.

В рамках запуска нескольких продуктов Bridgestone на Лас-Вегас Мотор Спидвей, мы проехали Potenzas по довольно сложной мокрой трассе для автокросса на симпатичном молниеносном BMW 328i. Нам удалось довольно сильно протолкнуть шины, и они показали лишь изящество под давлением.
Реакция руля была мгновенной, невероятно точной и доставляющей массу удовольствия. Шины имеют свирепое сцепление на мокром и влажном асфальте, удерживая курс на крутых поворотах и быстрых шиканах.
Сцепление было настолько удивительно хорошим, что во время нашего пробного запуска мы несколько раз корректировали выход из поворота, ожидая получить небольшое скольжение хвоста (к большому огорчению нашего пилота-инструктора – бразильского профессионального гонщика).

OVERVIEW
The Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT is a performance and high performance, all season tire made for passenger vehicles.
This tire offers great all weather traction thanks to its exceptional tread design and tire compound. It grips the road well in wet, dry and even winter weather and the compound does not lose its great traction in colder temperatures. The tread pattern’s circumferential grooves help eliminate water from below the footprint and enhance the tire’s resistance to dangerous hydroplaning situations. This makes the tire safer to use in all weather conditions.
The tire was manufactured using run flat technology, which provides temporary limited mobility in case of air pressure loss. The tire’s sidewalls support the vehicle in such cases, and it can be driven for 50 miles and up to the speed of 50 mph. Run flat tires are manufactured for vehicles that do not have space for spare tires, as they allow the driver to arrive at a safe destination, without being stranded on the side of the road in the case of a puncture. These tires cannot be used together with regular tires as their construction is heavier.
The tire was made with L. L. Carbon in its compound. The Long Link Carbon creates a long chain on the molecular level across the tread surface, which spreads out the driving pressure equally. The even distribution of the force of accelerating, cornering and braking prevents irregular wear on the tire, which extends its tread life. The tire’s structure is resistance to punctures and damages, such as chipping, cracking and tearing. The longer lasting, even tread and the slower wear rate, which is also the result of the L. L. Carbon, allows the tire to be used for a longer period of time.
The tire’s rolling resistance was lowered with the NanoPro-Tech. This technology blends the rubber elements with silica on the molecular levels, which enhances the benefits of the silica-based rubber compound. Most importantly the NanoPro-Tech reduces the rolling resistance of the tire. The lessened rolling resistance enables the tire to reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the vehicle, making the driving experience more cost efficient and environmentally friendly.
The Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT provides first-rate high speed performance. The spiral wrap in the tire’s structure maintains its shape, even under the pressure of high speed driving. As the tire does not deform,it becomes safer to use. The high speed performing capability of the model is further increased with the CO-CS (Computer Optimized Component System,) which combines a mixture of different elements to optimize the high speed performance of the vehicle.
Manufacturers recommend changing tires every 10 years. As long as tires are properly stored before they are sold, the year of their manufacture will not shorten their service life.
