Questions/Comments I’ve Heard

“No storage!” Yes, but I’ve ridden a few sportbikes/nakeds that I couldn’t fit a pair of gloves into the rear underseat compartment.

“Handling sucks, it’s a typical Harley.” The suspension is on-point, but the drag greatly limits the bike’s potential. Raise ride-height in the rear and you have a wonderfully handling motorcycle.

“That fairing doesn’t do anything.” It’s not a full fairing, no. But it does help a lot and is noticeable on the highway. Admittedly, it’s more for looks than function.

“Is the engine noticeably better?” Yes… slightly, but not just in performance. Honestly, you could probably create a bike with as much power for less money out of a 103 with bolt-ons, but the 110’s smoothness and easy torque is on-point.

Which Is Better: Harley Dyna Low Rider Vs. Harley Dyna Wide Glide

The Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider and the Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide are classic custom cruisers with blacked-out and chrome finishing. Both motorcycles are fitted with a Twin Cam 103TM engine which provides smooth power and torque delivery. The Harley Dyna Low Rider has a compact design and is easy to handle. It is good for daily commutes, weekend rides, and riding through traffic. However, it is uncomfortable for taller riders due to its mid-mounted foot controls and tight legroom.

Meanwhile, the Harley Dyna Wide Glide is a chopper-style motorcycle with a raked-out front end and longer wheelbase. It is good for short-distance rides through the city. The Harley Dyna Wide Glide is ideal for taller riders due to having forward-mounted foot controls and a longer overall length. It has a good linear performance but it is difficult to maneuver on twists and turns. Overall, the Harley Dyna Low Rider is the more balanced, agile, and versatile option between the two.

Engine, Gearbox and Exhaust

The Dyna Low Rider S’s 110 cubic inch, or 1801cc, Twin-Cam Screamin’ Eagle V-twin was then the biggest engine fitted on a Harley production bike. The gearbox and transmission, meanwhile, is standard five-speed Harley fare complete with the usual belt final drive.

The Low Rider S’s big ram-air intake and those gloriously ‘blacker-than-black’, twin side exit stacked pipes make way more noise than their Euro 4 friendly spec should suggest. It’s an incredible induction noise, sucking in small insects and blowing them out the back in a rage of V-twin glory. There’s a roar on the intake and a subtle rattle when you shut off so much so you’d swear it had been fitted as an aftermarket upgrade. But this is true, factory custom badness (in a good way) for less than £15,000.

Although the Harley-Davidson Low Rider S contains the word low, Jeremy Webb’s expectations of this stunning looking machine are sky-high. Read his review to discover whether the Low Rider S lives up to his very high expectations.

Harley-Davidson handed the keys to the latest version of the popular Low Rider S to this eagerly awaiting Writer. I then spent many days on it over the two week loan period as I enjoyed it so much. It completely changed my thoughts on ‘Hogs’.

Think of Harley-Davidson, and you picture Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider. Two modern-day travellers were roaming the States of the USA.

The iconic American Chopper bike took over from the horse in allowing adventurers to explore the immense prairies as cowboys of bygone days had.

Many motorcyclists have their own opinions of Harley-Davidson’s, and I was one of them until being fortunate to ride a few. My misconceptions fuelled by hearsay have been blasted away.

The electric Livewire I rode was futuristic, fast and fun. The Low Rider S with a 1900cc engine proved equally impressive.

This meaty engine gives you all the performance you will need with quick acceleration and high cruising speeds. It can sit along at 70 mph all day as it was intended to do, or you can blast around A and B roads, giving a great deal of pleasure.

Surprisingly agile for a Cruiser, the Low Rider S handles well when pushed along at speed.

The more I rode it, the greater my confidence grew, finding myself taking bends and roundabouts with high lean angles.

The only thing that stopped me pushing it more into turns was my concern over scrapping the exhaust pipes which sit low on the bike.

You sit in this bike rather than on it, immediately, you feel comfortable. I felt like Clint Eastwood straddling my steed, relaxing into a well-worn saddle.

Your arms don’t have to strain to reach the handlebars, so the riding position is ideal. On longer rides, I was totally relaxed. My only gripe is the positioning of the instrument displays, which are on the tank.

It has two round clock type displays, located in the middle of the petrol tank, sitting below the rider’s natural eye line. You have to look down to check speed, fuel etc. which does distract somewhat when looking ahead.

It would be great to see Harley-Davidson combine modern digital displays with the old look to keep the model’s essence.

I feel they could have fitted a digital panel behind the headlight cowling showing speed, revs and indicator light operation while maintaining the analogue displays. This would allow the rider to glance down quickly to see relevant information.

I had a fantastic time on the Harley Low Rider S; if the weather had been better, I would have been out every day on it. It blew me away, and all of those misguided comments from non-Harley owners.

The Iconic brand is clearly taking on the 21st century, the other bike manufacturers and looking to the future. It goes to show never judge a bike by its name. I can’t wait for another HD model to arrive at my door.

2018 Harley-Davidson Low Rider Review | Fast, Low, and now Softail

The Harley-Davidson Low Rider has been a feather in the Milwaukee-based brand’s cap since the late 1970s. Although its run hasn’t been uninterrupted, the Low Rider has remained one of the most popular models since its introduction.

Regarded as a do-it-all cruiser, the Low Rider is widely appreciated for its accommodating nature. Also, builders have often employed the Low Rider as a starting point, launching it into stardom.

At the 2018 Harley-Davidson Softail press introduction, Senior Editor Nic de Sena spent some time with the reinvented Softail-based Low Rider in the twisty mountain roads surrounding Lake Arrowhead, Calif., while narrowly avoiding countless chipmunks, hell-bent on throwing themselves under his wheels.

1. It’s a bold new era for the Low Rider, but the styling pulls from Harley-Davidson’s deep history. At a glance, the new Low Rider holds a lot in common with previous generations, sans the Dyna’s twin shocks. A full rear fender, clocks on the tank and the quintessential round headlight are in line with what the Low Rider has always been.

Small additions like the fork sliders now having a machined ridge and the cast wheels with various highlights of CNC work are aspects I find appealing. Above all, I enjoy the AMF-era Harley-Davidson logo emblazoned on the five-gallon fuel tank.

2. Although no longer a Dyna, the 2018 Harley-Davidson Low Rider is still low. Featuring a 27-inch seat height and mid controls that allow you to drive your weight through the pegs, the Low Rider is quite approachable for my 32-inch inseam. Thanks to slimmer profile of the Milwaukee-Eight engine—standard on all 2018 Harley-Davidson Softails—the Low Rider feels lean and svelte in comparison its Dyna iteration.

3. Harley-Davidson has tightened up the Low Rider’s ergos. Now equipped with aggressively swept handlebars, the Low Rider’s cockpit is on the snugger side of things. At 5’10’’, I’m more than comfortable and appreciated the Low Rider’s posture but taller riders could feel too cramped.

4. All 2018 Harley-Davidson Softails now feature a Milwaukee-Eight powerplant. The air-/oil-cooled, Milwaukee-Eight 107 is the smoothest big-inch V-twin that Harley has engineered yet, thanks to dual counter-balancing and wonderful fueling properties.

Providing a claimed 110 ft/lbs of torque at 3000 rpm, the 107ci allows you roar out of corners, pulling straight through the rev-range without a single hiccup along the way. Even with greater performance chops on hand, the Low Rider is a relatively docile creature when necessary, happily taking to the low-speed donkeywork that is commuter life. Although the six-speed transmission is hearty, it is not overly stiff and at no point did I stumble into any false neutrals.

Design: Harley Dyna Low Rider Vs. Dyna Wide Glide

3.1 Design: Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider

The Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider has a classic look due to its billet silver and vivid black dual-tone color scheme, and blacked-out and chrome finishing. The chrome parts include the front forks, a battery cover, mufflers, an air breather, and
handlebars. The Harley Dyna Low Rider comes with a comfortable single-piece saddle capable of two-up riding. It has a bobber-style front fender and a chopped rear fender with a classic tail light and license plate bracket mounted. The gauges are mounted on a peanut-shaped fuel tank with a capacity of 4.7 gal.

The Harley Dyna Low Rider comes with low-mounted pull-back handlebars with chrome side mirrors and front turn signals. A chrome plate fitted on top of a small round headlamp to improve aesthetics. Unlike Softails, the Harley Dyna Low Rider has dual rear shock absorbers with chrome rods and black springs fitted to the exterior. It comes with split five-spoke cast aluminum wheels with blacked-out and chrome finishing and Michelin Scorcher tires for better performance.

3.2 Design: Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide

The Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide has a taller front tire and raked-out front end, giving it a chopper look. It has a long wheelbase of 67.5 inches and an overall length of 96.3 inches. The Harley Dyna Wide Glide’s gauges are mounted on a peanut-shaped fuel tank with a capacity of 4.7 inches. The flame graphics on the fuel tank give it a stylish look. The Harley Dyna Wide Glide has a comfortable rider seat and a flat passenger seat with a small sissy bar installed to offer better comfort and safety. It has a bobber-style front fender and a chopped rear fender with a small tail light.

The Harley Dyna Wide Glide has a chrome two-into-one-into-two collector exhaust with dual mufflers, chrome front end, air breather, and dual rear shock absorbers. A chrome plate with a Wide Glide logo is fitted on a classic black battery cover below the seat. The blacked-out side mirrors and front turn signals are mounted on flat, drag
handlebars with four-inch black risers. The Harley Dyna Wide Glide is fitted with Michelin Scorcher 31 tires wrapped around steel-laced wheels.

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST arrives

The new kid on the Low Rider block in 2022 comes in the form of the all-new ST model. It’s a very close relative of the updated S, although instead of slotting into the boulevard basher segment, the ST has more miles in its sights.

From a chassis and engine perspective, the two machines are pretty much identical, meaning it gets the same 105hp and 125lb-ft of peak torque. The dash is also now the neat-looking bar-mounted TFT item.

What is new is the addition of a stylish front fairing and ‘tall bike’ SoCal stance. That means the panniers sit high on the subframe, and the rear suspension gives the bike a jacked-up look. The handlebar is high, and the FXRT-inspired fairing is frame-mounted on the front end of the bike.

The shape of the ST’s front fairing was developed by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis backed up by on-road testing. Triple split-stream vents are also claimed to help limit rider head buffeting at motorway speeds.

Speaking of the new styling, Brad Richards, H-D VP of Design said:

“A key element of this model is the frame-mounted fairing, which has a shape inspired by the classic FXRT Sport Glide model fairing favored by West Coast customisers … With a dominant central headlamp flanked by side vents, the genetic connection to the original FXRT remains familiar. The sharper creases and revised proportions in the Low Rider ST fairing provide a look that is intended to be modern, athletic, and aerodynamically superior to the FXRT fairing. The raised fitment of the saddlebags high above the exhaust reinforces the performance of the model – the message being that these bags will not limit lean angle when the bike is pushed to the limit.”

Styling and equipment

One of my slight bugbears with Harley-Davidson (and many other cruisers for that matter) styling and design is the trend of fitting rev-counter and speedo on the tank. Sure, in the rose-tinted world of retro-authenticity they are more period-correct. In the real world though, the constant glancing down to check on the vitals is annoying, and a tad dangerous.

That won’t be a problem on the ’22 Low Rider S, as the advent of a new analogue LCD combination design, sees the clock for the bike shifted from tank to handlebars.  The new, easier to read item places the gauge closer to the rider’s line of sight, while a textured black tank console with FXLRS branding now tops the fuel tank.

As with the outgoing S model, the styling of the bike is pure West Coast cruiser, with a deep solo seat, mid-mount foot controls, and a colour-matched mini speed screen fairing that frames the headlamp. The engine and exhaust are totally blacked out, with cast-aluminium wheels finished in Matte Dark Bronze to contrast with the rest of the bike.

Engine

4 out of 5 (4/5)

The Harley-Davidson Low Rider S’s brawny image is backed up by the biggest, most powerful motor in any of H-D’s regular road bikes – the Milwaukee-Eight 114. In plain English that’s an air-cooled, undersquare, 1868cc V-twin with four-valve heads.

But despite its extreme dimensions, it’s surprisingly civilised. Fuelling and throttle response are smooth, the gearbox clunks a bit but shifts cleanly, and vibration at tickover is a charismatic, characterful chug rather than Harley’s previous generation of shake, rattle and roll-off-the-sidestand.

Peak torque is a mammoth 114ft lb at a lowly 3000rpm – although, with a redline marked at just 5500rpm, that’s still halfway through the range. Tall gearing and a 308kg kerb weight means this titanic torque doesn’t translate to shoulder-dislocating acceleration on the road, but it still pulls with purpose and a plentiful 93bhp top end. It sounds genuinely glorious on full throttle too, a rich, rounded racket of thick, gloopy bass pulses.
