In tight, technical sections, the Special’s dragging floorboards quickly remind the rider of its 32-inch lean-angle. The Brembo brakes have plenty of bite and overall stopping power, but the lever’s short travel tempers feedback and feel. After a strong initial pull, the lever only nudges toward the handlebars. Without a linear progression at the lever, I learned to rely on the fork dive to properly calculate my braking force, but that isn’t a poor reflection of the suspension.
The hulking 49mm Showa fork gobbles up road irregularities without sacrificing steering. When preload is accurately tuned to the rider’s weight, the dual rear shocks deliver an ultra-plush ride. Whether it’s in the twisties or on the turnpike, the Road Glide Special stays stable and agile, at least for a big touring bike. Except for the rear shock’s preload adjustment knob, the suspension is fixed, but those stock settings meet the bagger’s needs. No, it isn’t performance-oriented but it performs well at the main objective: touring. All while remaining playful in the esses.

Technology
As with any Hog, the engine plays the starring role, but Harley’s Reflex Defensive Rider System (RDRS) turns in a surprise performance. Introduced on the 2020 Tri-Glide Ultra, Freewheeler, and CVO family, RDRS infuses Harley’s latest trikes and high-end tourers with long-overdue riding aids. Also available as an add-on for all touring rigs, the system incorporates lean-sensitive linked braking and ABS.
When it’s time to get back on the gas, the cornering-enhanced traction control adjusts to the available grip in all conditions with Standard and Rain modes. If the rider gets into the corner too hot, the Drag-Torque Slip Control System (DTSCS) mitigates rear-wheel slip under abrupt downshifts and deceleration. Despite the wealth of features and lengthy proprietary acronyms, RDRS operates in the background.
There aren’t multiple settings to choose between and Harley doesn’t complicate things with multi-layered menus. Yes, the features are always on but they never intrude unless the rider exceeds the system’s parameters. Aside from gauge icons illuminating once the systems activate, RDRS never detracts from the ride, but it can ultimately save it.
While I never initiated the traction control or ABS in my time with the Road King, DTSCS proved valuable when hustling through local canyons. The rear wheel still chirps under rapid deceleration, but the system quickly remedies the engine/rear-wheel speed differential before significant slippage occurs. It’s that invisible safety net that sets the RDRS apart, and most Harlistas would benefit from the simple yet effective technology.
The electronic suite isn’t entirely performance-oriented though. Harley’s Vehicle Hold Control is an invaluable tool for takeoffs on an incline. However, the most convenient feature is the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). When either tire dips below the ideal PSI, a light on the dash immediately alerts the user. Unless you’re accustomed to carrying a tire pressure gauge, the system ensures that riders don’t have to actively track PSI before each ride. Users can simply check the tire status by cycling through the speedometer’s secondary display window.
RDRS may not offer multiple levels of engine braking or customizable ride modes, but the system seamlessly integrates into the Harley ecosystem. Catering to brand converts without isolating brand loyalists, the new tech stays true to the Harley feel by improving function while preserving form. The new-fangled tech may subtly refine the Road King Special, but the Milwaukee-Eight V-twin still takes center stage.
Road King lowlights
Well, ground clearance just sucks. It always has on these bikes. You run out of lean angle waaaaay before you run out of tire. I wrecked the floorboards and the mounts.

Those tires, Dunlops (D408F on the front, and a D407T on the rear), stink too. I mean, they are OK mileage-wise, and their dry weather grip is acceptable, but wet-weather performance is awful. Cornering is actually not terrible, but when the bike was upright, I slipped and slid on a variety of surfaces: gas station tank filler caps, toll booth scale strips, and lots of painted road markings. In the first two gears, Hot Rod Lem enjoyed grabbing a handful of throttle to initiate a good rolling burnout, but that’s not a good thing. These tires are junk in wet weather. I think the problem is the “Multi-Tread” technology on the rear D407T; the center section designed for long wear puts the bike on ice skates in wet weather.

The seat is horrible. Standard Harley. They know we replace them, and they ain’t spending any money on them. Specifically, there are two huge ridges you can feel right on your butt bones. The padding is not thick enough to make them unobtrusive.
The Road King’s headlights were not the famed Daymaker LED, but the halogens were excellent on both high and low beams. The passing lamps were also useful for filling in the area in front of the front wheel. Some re-wiring or re-programming to enable their use with the high beam would make this a formidable setup. Though lighting on the Kingy was generally awesome, the passing lamps need to be reprogrammed or re-wired to run with high beams. Yes, I know H-D cannot legally sell the bike that way. No, I don’t care, and need them anyway. Deer don’t follow the rules of the road. In the same vein, the dedicated hazard lights button is nice, but Harley spent 20 years training us to hit both turn signal indicators (Harley uses a button on each bar for right and left signals, for you metric riders) to get the emergency flashers to actuate. It would have been nice if they had programmed that logic into the new system for old dogs like me who take a little while to learn new tricks.
In 2,500 miles or so, we started losing the left fork leg reflector. If that’s the most serious longevity issue we can expect from this freshman engine, I’m pretty optimistic about its future. RevZilla photo.
Next up? Keyless ignition, otherwise known as the “security option.” It costs $395 and our bike had it. This is nothing new for Harley, but this system has sucked for years, and still does. It works great — until it doesn’t. If you forget your fob, or it craps out on you on the road, there’s this stupid, complicated procedure we’ve all been using for years where you fart around with the turn signals punching in a code, and God help you if you bought your bike used or didn’t program in your own code. If you’ve got the optional siren ($94.95), forget it. You’ll be making so much noise that everyone will assume you’re stealing the thing (ineffectively) as you try to get your bike to start. My idea of bike security involves a chain, double-aught buck, and the confidence to know that the thief will get tired of kicking it long before he figures out what the sequence is to start it. Harley, just give me a normal key-actuated ignition, please.
Oh, and regardless of the keyless ignition, you still need to carry a key if you wish to lock your saddlebags. The security option is the worst-executed feature of the bike. At least it’s optional, but good luck finding a dealer who ordered a Road King without this; it’s de rigeur these days. At least the Road King has a “normal” non-locking fuel cap. Ask me how far you can get on a Street Glide with an unlocked ignition, no key, and a locking fuel cap.

The 2013 MY Harley Davidson Road King sports an air-cooled, 1690cc, Twin Cam 103 powerplant mated to the proven manual, six-speed Cruise Drive transmission, and boasts 135 Nm at 3250 rpm. This translates into a smooth power delivery, whether on a short, evening stroll through the city or a weekend long haul, even two-up.
