2018 Harley-Davidson news and updates
Harley introduced a ninth member of the new Softail family, the Sport Glide, in early November 2017. The Sport Glide is based on the new Softail frame and uses the Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine. Quick release hard saddlebags and small fairing-based windshield equip the Sport Glide for city cruising and over-the-road touring.
The 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle model lineup drops eight models 2017, including the Superlow 1200T, Low Rider S, Wide Glide, Softail Slim S, Fat Boy S, V-Rod Muscle, Night Rod Special, and CVO Pro Street Breakout. Two models carried over with name changes, 2017’s Heritage Softail Classic is 2018’s Heritage Classic, and 2017’s Softail Deluxe, is the 2018 Deluxe. The one brand new model name for 2018 is the CVO Road Glide.
The biggest change for 2018, one that has some Harley purists unhappy, is the abandonment of the Dyna line in favor of a completely reworked Softail family. The new Softails merge model names previously associated with Softail and Dyna families. The eight Softail models look familiar at first glance, but from the tires to the suspensions, lights, and frames, the changes are significant.
Other than the Softails, the remaining Harley groups are largely unchanged in 2018 except for colors, but we’ll hit the highlights of each family and model below.
Harley-Davidson Roadster Drivetrain
- 1,200 cc Evolution engine
- 76 lb-ft @ 3,750 rpm
- Quick acceleration
- Massive low-end torque for explosive hole shots
The Sportster lineup has essentially used the same basic engine design since 1986, so this engine has certainly paid its dues and given solid performance. Before putting it in the Roadster, there were a number of innovations and improvements over the years that make this mill superior to its forebears, no matter how much they look alike. Harley went to fuel injection across the board to meet emissions standards, but so far have kept the Sportster as an air-cooled mill in its characteristic, 45-degree V-Twin configuration.
The 3.5-inch bore and 3.811-inch stroke add up to 1202.8 cc (73.4 cubic-inches), and the mill runs a 10-to-1 compression ratio, not particularly hot, but high enough to take mid-grade, at least. All this combines to produce 76 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm and 48 mpg. This is plenty of power for explosive hole shots and relatively quick acceleration, but top-end is still only going to be around 100-ish; so it’s quick, but not necessarily fast.
Unlike my 2000 Sporty, rubber isolation mounts prevent much of the vibration from transferring to the frame, and so it will be less fatiguing on the highway. A five-speed transmission and belt drive makes the final connection to the rear wheel and pavement.

Engine
3 out of 5 (3/5)
The familiar 1202cc, air-cooled, pushrod V-twin is completely unchanged from that of its cruiser siblings.
Bumping up the capacity by 30% to 1202cc has had an obvious effect on the power, so the shuddering Milwaukee lump now puts out 66bhp and 73ftlbs of torque – a significant bump up from the 883.
This gives it much more drive out of the corners and when out for a fun ride, you can just leave it in third gear and ride everywhere on a wave of torque. Being honest, that’s the most enjoyable way to ride it.
If you want to get the maximum amount of power out of it, you can rev it until all four of the valves start dancing on top of the cylinder head but all you’ll do is give yourself earache and burn all your fuel without making much more progress. Instead, just sit back, relax and bring on the noise.
2020 Harley-Davidson Roadster
Contents
The Harley-Davidson Roadster takes the Sportster like to its pinnacle. The bike is the sportiest-looking of the lineup. The Roadster is the most badass-looking of the Sportster line, too. There’s not a bike in Harley’s lineup that can compete with the Roadster.
The Roadster gets a good looking V-twin engine with a displacement of 1,200cc. The V-twin is air-cooled and sounds like the classic Harley you expect. It’s Harley’s tried and true Evolution motor but slightly up-tuned. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission and it makes 67 hp and 76 lb-ft of torque.
The Roadster offers a lot of what the Forty-Eight and Iron 1200 do but with a more aggressive riding position and style. It’s not the most powerful motorcycle out there, but it is still one you shouldn’t overlook. The bike has a starting price of $11,499.
The motorcycle is available in three colors: Vivid Black, Barracuda Silver, and Billiard Blue.

Harley-Davidson XL1200R Sportster Roadster (2016 – on) verdict
Harley set out to make the Roadster a true café racer and its sportiest Sportster yet – and it certainly succeeded. It looks good, handles better and yet still has the traditional, solid, Harley underpinnings and experience that set the American brand apart. It’s good in the bends, has enough grunt out of them and the brakes work as they should too. As such it reminds of a kind of Harley version of the old Triumph Thruxton.
The whole experience makes you feel good, digging the Harley vibe, chugging along using the torque of the motor, and taking in the view. It’s one of those bikes that gets better and better, the more you ride it. And it exudes cool too.
Ride quality & brakes
4 out of 5 (4/5)
A bigger 19in front, 18in rear lightweight alloy wheel combo, along with proper, longer rear shocks plus fat 43mm USD forks at the front changes the whole orientation of the 1200’s familiar tubular steel cradle frame, making it distinctly more ‘arse up, nose down’, in true café racer style.
And that, allied with a decent twin disc brake set-up complete with twin four-piston calipers, semi ‘ace’ handlebars, more rear-set footpegs plus a beautifully made race-style seat adds up to a bike that’s both a doddle to get on with and one that urges you to hustle and scratch.
It’s a joy to steer, which it does quickly and precisely, the ride is more controlled and sophisticated than any previous Sportster and the brakes are so good it’s as if Harley has finally discovered how good modern brakes can be.
Harley-Davidson Roadster (2016 – 2020) verdict
The Roadster is a surprisingly charming model and well worth considering if you want an air-cooled Harley. It has bags of scope for customisation if that’s your thing yet even in stock form it looks and sounds the part. The addition of ‘performance’ parts such as the twin discs and inverted forks make it handle better than other Sportster models and even though it is far from a café racer, it does have a lovely aggressive silhouette about it. Best of all, however, is the fact you are highly unlikely to lose much money on it – in fact, it will probably increase in value over the years if you keep it in good condition as Harley fans start to search out quality air-cooled models now that they are no longer made.
Harley-Davidson Roadster Chassis
- Beefy inverted forks
- Agile handling
- Optional ABS
- Screw-type preload adjustment
The factory pulled the steering head in a bit for 28.9 degrees of rake and 5.5 inches of trail, geometry it claims is optimized for agility in keeping with the race-tastic bent of the Roadster. A set of 43 mm, usd forks with tri-rate springs supports the front on 4.5 inches of travel, and a set of gas shocks with tri-rate, coil-over springs and a screw-type preload adjustment on 3.2 inches of travel.
I like inverted forks for their stability and torsion resistance, and these make the Roadster look like serious business, definitely my favorite of the new-from-2016 features. The 19-inch front, and 18-inch rear tires push the seat up to 30.9 inches high, leaving us with 6 inches of ground clearance and the potential for over 30 degrees of lean. All of this gives us more suspension travel and lean angle than you would normally expect from a Sportster model.
Twin-pot calipers bind the overkill-sized, 300 mm front brake discs, with a third dual-piston binder in back. You can add the ABS option for a few dollars more, or go old-school with the unaugmented brake system. I would point out that dual 300’s are much more than is called for on a 568-pound machine, but the dual-piston-and-anvil calipers act as the limiting factor to avoid overbraking, I suppose. A 120/70R19 front and 150/70R18 rear hoop rounds out the rolling chassis with a decidedly street-racy tread profile.

Harley-Davidson Roadster Price
As usual, Harley is fairly proud of its product, and it shows on the sticker. The base model in Vivid Black will set you back $11,499, two bills up from last year. As usual, the King of Paint offers upgrade paint packages for $11,849, but dropped the two-tone in 2019. ABS will run you another $795, and the security option is another $395. California brothers and sisters can expect to see another bill tacked on for your unique emissions requirements.

Harley-Davidson Roadster Competitor
Triumph Motorcycles has ever been one of the traditional foes to the U.S.-based Harley-Davidson Motor Company, and Americans have always had a certain affinity for Trumpets. Even clubs with “Harley-only” in the bylaws will tolerate a Brit or two in the pack, and so I decided to take the H-D Roadster head-to-head against Triumph’s café racer/stoplight bully, the Thruxton 1200.
Triumph Thruxton 1200 / 1200 R
While the Thruxton is arguably as bare as the Roadster, it has a more refined café panache and a certain grace. The Roadster really looks like someone went a little nuts with the grinder and took the fenders down to a nub in the backyard, and while that is not without a certain charm all its own, it leaves the bike lacking a little something visually.
Both rides run air-cooled, twin-cylinder plants with 1200 cc displacement, but naturally the H-D is a 45-degree V-twin while the Trumpet runs a parallel-twin. The British Bulldog comes out on the dyno, with the Thruxton showing 82.6 pound-feet at 4,950 rpm, an edge over the Evolution with 76 pounds of grunt at 3,750.
The Motor Company gets some back at the till. At $11,499 in Vivid Black, it’s over a grand cheaper than the Jet Black Thruxton 1200, but the Triumph comes with ABS as standard equipment, and with that factored in the price difference is marginal. Course, the Triumph colors just aren’t quite as cool.

Equipment
3 out of 5 (3/5)
The familiar, cruiser-style chunky switch-gear and, particularly, control levers and footpegs are basically unchanged from the existing Sportster 1200 models. While for me, the humpbacked, ‘Peanut’ fuel tank, which was originally specifically designed to meet a cruiser aesthetic, jars with the overall look, too.
The bars are one-piece, tubular steel turned-down ‘ace’ bars of the type familiar (although the Harley’s are wider) from Triumph’s old Thruxton 900.
To continue the café racer theme, footpegs are more rear-ward (although hardly rearset), there’s a new, beautifully made race-style seat, chopped down mudguards, a neat, multi-function single tacho dial which incorporates a digital speedo and three different paint options (gloss black, satin black, metallic red or two-tone silver/black).
Harley-Davidson Roadster —
Harley-Davidson Roadster /

Triumph Bonneville Bobber
Triumph Bonneville Bobber
Bonneville Bobber
