Тюнинг
Ни на один мотоцикл в мире нет столько доступного тюнинга, сколько на любой Харлей Дэвидсон. В-Род не стал исключением, изменить на свой вкус в нём можно всё без исключения. Некоторые умельцы даже устанавливают полноценный бензобак вместо фальшбака, чтобы увеличить запас хода.
Тормоза, подвеска и колеса
Тормозная система на UL является образцом стандартной технологии 1940-х годов, спереди и сзади используются исключительно барабанные тормоза. Как и большинство ранних тормозных систем от Харлея, работа переднего тормоза оставляла желать лучшего, основная работа от торможения по большей части приходилась на большие задние барабанные механизмы. Привод обоих тормозных исполнительных механизмов тех лет не был знаком с гидравликой, по этой причине прикладывать усилия к нему нужно вдвойне. Для переднего тормоза использовался трос, тянувшийся от расположенной справа ручки до установленного на противоположенной стороне колеса барабана. Сзади установлен ряд регулируемых тяг для передачи нажатия на педаль тормоза размещенной над правой подножкой, через раму, на барабан, смонтированный с левой стороны.
UL-ки были гордыми обладателями рамы «хардтейл», что означает, никакой задней амортизации в ней не существует. Разумеется, в 30-40-е годы это было абсолютно стандартным решением. Отсутствие задней подвески частично нивелируется использованием подрессоренного сиденья на одну персону. Эта конструкция работает по принципу всем известного развлекательного тренажера «Кузнечик» производившегося еще во времена СССР. Для мягкости сидения под ним (сидением) установлены несколько пружин, закрепленных на одном валу, расположенном внизу недр задней части трубчатой рамы и соединенных вверху со средней частью сиденья. Точки поворота в передней части сиденья прикреплены к верхней части рамы, чтобы обеспечить дополнительную стабилизацию. Седло имеет только вертикальную настройку, вверх, вниз.
К чести сказать, на Harley-Davidson 1947 года все же есть подвеска, это передняя вилка «Springer». Engine and Transmission
The best place to start is with the ever faithful Harley Davidson V Twin engine.
In this case the Breakout was originally fitted with the Twin Cam 103 V twin, a 1,690cc monster that packed a soul satisfying rumble.
It produces 129 Nm of torque which gives you plenty of passing power across the rev range, you get quick acceleration and for a heavy muscle bike somewhat more akin to a Cadillac than a motorcycle, it’s pretty sporty.
This is a Harley that slammed critics saying the American cruisers couldn’t be energetic or exciting.
Out of the exhaust comes that pure sound you expect out of a big Harley Davidson although for some it will never satisfy the need for more noise and quite often stock exhausts are the first things to be modified.
Overall the 103 engine offered a responsive ride that impressed riders at the time who otherwise had few nice things to say about HD’s.
If you had ridden the CVO Breakout fitted with the Twin Cam 110B powerplant you would notice less oomph and top end particularly as the CVO was fitted with the Screamin’ Eagle Stage 1 system. However, that is something super easy to do on the base model to open up your 103 motor a bit more.
Over the years different powerplants were offered in the model with the latest variant from 2017 onwards having been fitted with the Milwaukee-Eight 114 V twin.
Chassis, Styling, Handling

Housing the motor is the Softail chassis that closely resembles a classic hardtail frame but has hidden rear suspension to make the ride more comfortable and offers support to a rider’s lower back.
The frame retains practical functionality but is responsive unlike the early hardtail models, some of which were sketchy to say the least.
HD used a racing style cartridge fork on the front to provide top feedback to the rider, rolling over bumps on your trip isn’t jarring and the rigidity of the chassis means spirited riding is encouraged.
The bike has big wheels, a tall skinny front, and fat rear added to the chopper styling and giving the model an overall slammed look.
The original 2013 Harley Breakout set the bar for how the model would develop and its styling over the years didn’t change all that much.
HD designers had given the bike a hardtail look and the concept behind the model was lean muscle. When you strip back some bikes they can be very skinny and meek looking, the Breakout is stripped back with overall reduced weight but proudly displays its muscle.
Chopped fenders, lots of rubber on display and the jewel of the crown is obviously the V twin centre piece.
A super low seat height puts the rider at ease and this continues with the relaxed riding position of feet forward and arms out front. Harley is well known for providing accessories for their models so adjusting the bike specifically to your needs with different bars etc is an easy task.
Braking isn’t incredible, so while the Breakout pulls like a freight train it also slows like one. That might be a bit dramatic but the single front disc could do with a friend to assist that’s for sure.
Overall the cockpit works pretty well with all the information you need displayed quite nicely, in the later models the display was integrated into a unit in the handlebars.
You get all the data you need including a speedometer, odometer,tachometer indication, fuel level and clock.
The 2017 onwards model is favoured today as it received substantial performance based refinements including the engine, new double cradle Softail frame, on trend styling, it is overall cleaner and meaner which is exactly what a brute like the Breakout needs to be.

The Breakout was Australia’s top performing Harley and it has done equally well in Europe and the US.
It is a simpler cruiser than some of the other touring based cruisers, it has less features and is solely focused on the ride; which I am happy to say clearly some riders still enjoy!

Fans of the now deleted Harley V-Rod may have lamented the demise of the American firm’s stand out drag style bike, but with the arrival of the new 2018 Breakout, H-D came up with a ready-made replacement.

Basically a long, kicked-out, dragster-style cruiser with a ridiculously fat rear tyre, the Breakout uses Harley’s new lighter, stronger Softail frame as introduced in 2018 and is powered by the punchier, ‘Milwaukee-Eight’ version of the classic H-D, 45-degree V-twin which debuted in Harley’s touring range the previous year.
The forks are kicked out to a low slung 34 degrees and brace a new design, skinny, 21-inch front wheel. At the rear, a special, wide swingarm holds a simply massive, 240mm-wide, 18-incher.
While in-between is new, low slung, drag-style bodywork (including new 13.2litre tank) which plants the rider low and stretching forward to the virtually straight, one-piece tubular bars which hold an ultra-minimalist, digital instrument pod.
It all reeks of aggressive attitude and straight-line bad behaviour and boy does it deliver – for better and worse. As a straightline, American V-twin dragster there are few better (although Harley’s own, more recent, single seat FXDR is arguably more extreme still, and cheaper to boot).
It also looks fabulous, has the ‘right’ badge on the tank and is a hoot when blasting away from the lights. But the flipside of that is an extreme riding position that’s borderline agony on extended journeys (and we certainly wouldn’t recommend riding one on motorways) limited practicality and awkward handling through turns or traffic, due to the kicked out front and fat back tyre, that takes more than a little getting used to.
Build quality and reliability, as with all of this generation of ‘Milwaukee Eight’ powered, Softail chassised Harleys, is excellent and peripherals such as instruments (though minimal on the Breakout), lights etc are all much improved. Harley residuals are traditionally superb, too.
The Breakout, though, is far more extreme than most and, particularly in the UK, has niche appeal. But if you love the look and are undaunted by its extreme ergonomics, ‘unusual’ handling and minimal practicality – and we know of more than one buyer who couldn’t live with it – you won’t be disappointed.
Engine

As with three other members of Harley’s 2018 Softail family, the new Breakout now uses the four-valve, partially oil-cooled ‘Milwaukee Eight’ 107ci (1746cc) V-twin, as introduced in its 2017 touring range, with the option also of a 114ci (1868cc) version.
Both are modified for Softail use via a new oil cooler subtly positioned between the downtubes and, as they’re rigidly mounted in the new Softail frames (in the tourers they’re rubber mounted) come with two, not one, balancer shafts.
The 107ci version delivers 86bhp while the 114ci, as tested here, 93bhp. And while those figures may not sound that much and be dwarfed by the likes of Ducati’s 160bhp Diavel, both are significantly more than previous Harleys, benefit from bags of accompanying torque and simply begs to be unleashed at every tyre-squealing opportunity.
Up to 70mph or so, should the mood take you, few bikes are more dramatic yet like all big Harleys the Breakout can also be happily gently cruised around on to a familiar Harley ‘potato-potato’ soundtrack.
The five-speed gearbox, though a little clunky and crude, gives a certain rustic charm and Harley’s traditional belt final drive is fault-free and proven and also has the benefit of requiring less maintenance than a chain.
2023 Harley-Davidson Breakout – Engine & Performance
With hot rod or dragster style bikes like this it’s all about the engine and performance – particularly in a straight line – and that’s certainly always been the case with the Harley-Davidson Breakout.
The big news, accordingly, with this latest version is its new engine, which is currently Harley-Davidson’s largest version of the ‘Milwaukee Twin’ incarnation of its traditional, air-cooled, pushrod operated 45-degree V-twin.
The ‘117’ part of its name refers to the American convention of measuring capacity in cubic inches which equates in metric terms to a whopping 1923cc.
The numerical performance which results from that is peak power of 102bhp at just 5020rpm and peak torque of 124.6lb.ft at an even lower 3500rpm, with both being significantly up on the old Breakout 107’s 86bhp and 107lb.ft (the optional 114ci/1868cc engine had figures somewhere in-between).
That said, although decently punchy and with a fat midrange that squeals the equally fat rear tyre if you whack open the throttle, the big twin’s delivery is familiar, characterful. Generally speaking, it’s more flexible, friendly and versatile than you might expect and is still accompanied by a traditional Harley clunkiness and crude charm, but in this incarnation there’s also an extra macho raw punch that excites when you whack open the throttle, especially as the only electronics are ABS, switchable traction and cruise…
Overall, as with most old school air-cooled Harley-Davidsons, the Breakout 117 is all about easy, lazy, ‘potato-potato’, low revving cruising with little need for gearchanges or slipping clutches, but with the Breakout 117 you also get an extra dollop of snarling, tyre-squealing grunt when you snap the throttle when the need arises.

Finding a Harley Davidson Breakout For Sale
You can still find 2020 Breakout models for sale in the US at dealers, prices vary depending on individual deals the seller can do.
As a start the MSRP is $20,499 however, I would think dealers will be keen to get these gone now and there will be deals to be had depending on availability.
In the UK the Breakout starts from £21,395 new.
There are obvious benefits buying a new motorcycle from a dealer such as the fact it will come with a guarantee but there are plenty of Breakouts on the used market available that can save you a great deal of cash.
Prices in the US start from around $15,000, as the bikes aren’t very old, many are in excellent condition and are low mileage examples. For CVO variants you can expect to pay quite a bit more – around $20,000 and for custom Breakout’s prices can escalate to $30,000.
In the UK prices start at around £14,000 on the used market. There are plenty around the £16,000 mark with less than 3,000 miles.

The higher the star rating, the better the security, so always ask your dealer what rating your bike has and compare it to other machines on your shortlist.
Rivals
Among the battle for the best buxom bruiser are these four heavyweights up to whom the Breakout matches up in terms of riding position and road presence. In this category, introverts need not apply, nor those with minimal experience at handling big-but-low cruisers. A quick scan over the table will demonstrate a fairly good match-up in price, once the BMW has a few almost mandatory options added. Torque figures are so vast they’re almost incomparable despite the huge difference between the 127Nm of the Ducati vs. the Triumph’s enormous 221Nm. On the road they’d all be very strong off the line and unless you regularly frequent drag strips on your cruiser, the gap between them is much more subtle than the spec sheet suggests. When comparing power, it’s best to also consider weight but then again, you’re looking at the wrong bike type if power is a deciding factor.
